In honor of Oscar's birthday, the boys decided to make him a doggy pizza. I made the dough from a dog biscuit recipe, and the boys added Oscar's favorite toppings--peanut butter instead of pizza sauce, crumbled dog biscuits instead of cheese, and carrots instead of pepperoni.

I'm a stranger just reading your blog out of a moment of homesickness for Bavaria. I lived in Bayreuth for nine years before we moved in 2007 to London (my husband's job). My husband is German, I'm American. I skimmed the blog except for two posts "Sicko" -- agree with you there, the NHS although you always hear complaints about, has also struck me as fantastic -- and the Bavarian School System. Brought back many unhappy memories, since my oldest son had a terrible fourth grade teacher who kept 15 out of 18 children in the Hauptschule. My son took a test for the Realschule, which he fortunately passed, did fine in the Realschule, and is now a straight A student in an Int'l School here.
Anyways, I am blue because I do miss living in my own house and the beautiful Oberfranken area and the good friends I made in this teeny tiny village we lived in. We promised our kids we would go back in two years but we have had to extend another year. My two oldest sons are very sad and mising his friends. On the other hand, I love living in London and being in such a cosmopolitan area. I can't imagine how I lived in that tiny village for so long.
I know Erlangen because I have visited friends there. My American friend (German Siemens employed husband) however absolutely refused to move there. So I marvel at you and how well you seem to cope in this very insular city. I wonder if your son has got his Uebertrittszeugnis and what is happening with that? Also, want to tell you you write well and I enjoyed reading your blog.

Thank you for reading my blog, and yes, Philip made it into Realschule, but it was not a straightforward Übertritt. I promise to write a post about it soon.
I love this! I remember one year my boys made a similar doggie birthday cake out of rice cakes and peanut butter!
